Sharjah Art Foundation has announced an open call for a Curator-in-Residence, the first of an annual programme sposored by the Sharjah-based low cost airline Air Arabia. Selected candidates (and yes, it does seem to be plural) will be offered a residency in Sharjah to conduct research and curate an exhibition with artists from across Air Arabia’s many destinations. The exhibition would open in March 2018.
The blurb notes that “our region is continuously redefined and ever-changing. This residency aims to exemplify this state of flux by inviting curators to work with local, regional and international artists with different backgrounds who are determined by Air Arabia’s flight network map”. The Air Arabia restriction could actually be very fertile, since the airline flies to 70+ cities around the world – many of which represent high-potential destinations for relatively undiscovered art, especially on the subcontinent and the Stans, but also including the likes of Egypt, Morocco and the Balkans.
Otherwise there seem to be very few constraints: “while the specific aims of the curatorial residency may vary, we look for proposals that report a genuine interest in engaging the regional context”.
The application form is here. Deadline: 30 June 2017
