Abu Dhabi Classics season: Bayreuth Festival’s Die Walküre (The Valkyrie)
1 February @ 7.00 pm - 10.00 pmAED 200 – AED 1195
A second performance for the Bayreuth Festival’s international debut. The Festival is noted for its delivery of Richard Wagner’s operas, normally performed in the Bayreuth Festspielhaus – a theatre designed by Wagner himself so that he could produce his own works – and invariably sold out (over 500,000 requests each year for 60,000 tickets).
So this is something of a coup for the Abu Dhabi Classics team. “We have been working with Katharina Wagner for many years to bring this project to fruition,” said Said Saif Saeed Ghobash, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, “and it is truly unique. The Bayreuth Festival is coming to Abu Dhabi with a production reflecting its outstanding artistic quality and innovative vision which at the same time proves that Abu Dhabi is a platform for world-class cultural offerings.”
The full orchestra and chorus will be performing The Valkyrie, the second of the four operas that form the Ring cycle, under the artistic direction of the composer’s great granddaughter Katharina Wagner. Stephen Gould, one of the most sought-after heroic tenors in the opera world today, sings Siegmund; Daniela Köhler is Sieglinde, Catherine Foster Brünnhilde. Also in the cast: Albert Dohmen, Egils Silins, Christa Mayer, Caroline Wenborne, Christiane Kohl, Edna Prochnik, Eliška Weissová and Mareike Morr.
The evening will also include Katharina’s feature-length film of the story of The Valkyrie, revisiting the main locations that inspired Wagner’s work.
