Valentine’s Day Mambo Dance
14 February @ 8.00 pm - 11.00 pmAED 105
Arturo O’Farrill and his 18-piece Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra play NYUAD’s East Plaza for a Valentine’s Day dance. The Grammy-award winning Afro Latin Jazz band – 18 accomplished musicians led by pianist, composer, and director Arturo O’Farrill – promise the drama of big band jazz with the energy and passion of Latin music.
The audience will also get the opportunity to take a professional Mambo dance lesson at 7pm on the night before the gig gets under way. Said Bill Bragin, Executive Artistic Director at The Arts Center: “Mambo, which had its heyday in the 50s, marries the intricacies of Afro-Cuban music with the power and propulsive sounds of big band swing, and there’s no better way to light up a dance floor. It’s music with elegance, charm, and sophistication, so it’s perfect for Valentine’s Day.
“This night of mambo music focuses on O’Farrill’s musical roots, setting the stage for a residency for the world premiere of his Cuban-Khaleeji Project concert the following week. The music and the audience experience will be completely different (yes, I’m encouraging everyone to come to both), and this master lesson in classic Cuban American music will form the foundation of the collaboration with Gulf and North African music to come later.”
