LAST CHANCE Tashweesh: Material Noise
This collaboration between Maraya Art Centre and UAE Unlimited is a group show with new works by six UAE-based artists – Mona Ayyash, Ayesha Hadhir, Rawdha Al Ketbi, Hashel Al Lamki, Zara Mahmood and Tor Seidel – plus a new multimedia installation by guest artist and mentor Nujoom Al Ghanem (who will represent the UAE at this year’s Venice Biennial). This is the fifth annual exhibition commissioned by UAE Unlimited; it’s curated by Maraya’s Laura Metzler.
In Arabic, ‘Tashweesh’ refers to white noise as produced by radios and televisions; but it can also mean mental disruption or confusion, a result of being overwhelmed. The six UAE artists created works specifically for the exhibition that respond to the idea of everyday material noise, taking inspiration from the environment around us and looking for elements that are often overlooked.
