Sharjah Film Platform (SFP)
18 January - 26 JanuaryAED 15
This new annual film festival from Sharjah Art Foundation runs from 18-26 January and looks like a useful indie/arts-oriented alternative to the mainstream film festivals in Dubai (now apparently suspended) and Abu Dhabi (long deceased). Building on over a decade of support for film and moving image works by SAF, the first edition of SFP presents screenings in Mirage City Cinema, Al Mureijah Square; Al Hamriyah Studios, Al Hamriyah; Africa Hall, Al Manakh; and Al Hamra Cinema, Al Rolla.
SFP will screen over 140 short and feature films in the narrative, documentary and experimental categories from more than 40 countries and in over 30 languages. A number of the films will have their premieres at the festival, including the two films by the SFP Short Film Production Grant awardees. In a collaboration with The Africa Institute, Sharjah Art Foundation will also present three restored films by Youssef Chahine at Africa Hall to mark the tenth anniversary of the acclaimed Egyptian director’s passing.
Alongside the screenings is a programme of talks by local, regional and international film professionals, with topics from VR and future technologies to documentary filmmaking practices, funding sources in the MENASA region and legal aspects of the film industry. Also featured in SFP are hands-on workshops focusing on different aspects of film production and the film industry, such as screenwriting, film lighting, video production, animation and visual effects.
All talks and workshops are free. Tickets to film screenings are now available for purchase on Ticketmaster and will be on sale at the venues and the SFP box office in Sharjah Art Foundation’s Information Centre, Al Mureijah Square from 18 to 26 January; general admission is AED 15, but buy ten or more and the price is AED 8 each.
