This documentary, set in Kyrgyzstan, is a search for the fictional Jamilia, the heroine of Chingiz Aitmatov’s novel – a young woman who rebelled against the rules of Kyrgyz society and left her unhappy arranged marriage. We meet women who talk about Jamilia and along the way reveal something of their own lives and desires, the rules they chafe under and their ideas of freedom.
It is showing with an Italian short, Primo, dir Federica Gianni (2017); on a visit to meet his girlfriend’s parents in a remote village in Tuscany, Primo is forced to prove his masculinity on a wild boar hunt.
This presentation is part of Alliance Française Dubai’s Femmes Film Festival, a second consecutive year for this programme of films by female directors from Mediterranean countries.
