In the Land of the Head Hunters: cine-concert with Rodolphe Burger
1 April @ 8.00 am - 5.00 pmAED 100
A unique live concert from French musician Rodolphe Burger, performing his musical interpretation of rare silent-movie masterpiece In the Land of the Head Hunters (dir Edward S Curtis, 1914). One of the first feature-length dramas ever made, the movie stars members of the Kwakwaka’wakw tribe of British Columbia in a haunting melodrama set before Europeans arrived on the Canadian Pacific coast; the story of a warrior’s spiritual journey and of love won and lost, the film was painstakingly reconstructed from the original reels for its 100th anniversary.
Mixing electronic music and Native American songs, Rodolphe Burger improvises a score to accompany the film. Burger has had a long and varied career over more than 30 years, notably in the influential French art-rock band Kat Onoma (Velvet Underground meets Talking Heads with a brass section) and via five solo albums and 20 or so collaborations with everyone from Olivier Cadiot and Françoise Hardy to James Blood Ulmer and Rachid Taha. For the last few years he’s been running a music festival in Alsace and developing creative performances like this one; the In the Land of the Head Hunters project was originally performed in 2015 at the Les Rencontres de la photographie festival in Arles.
