Curated by Anna Barbara (Politecnico di Milano; SenseLab, Milan) and Indu Varanasi (irdesign, Dubai) HERstory is a cross-cultural interaction between women who have ‘enlightened’ lives through their words, deeds and actions.
The HERstory idea was developed through a multi-sensory workshop held in the Women’s Museum where five female Emirati artists worked with five socially active women to produce a new relationship between creative pairs “with emotive as well as cognitive elements”.
The artists were Sanaa Al Maktoum, Afra Atiq, Alia Lootah, Dr Najat Makki and Majida Nasreddin; the protagonists were Moza Al Maktoum, Isobel Abulhoul, Kusum Dutta, Hissa Mohammed Hasan and Dr Elisabeth Stoney. Each woman brought to HERstory her own personal social and human experience; each artist contributes her own sensitivity, vision, creativity, to tell us of their shared history.
The resulting exhibition is a display of words, images, objects, and videos, interwoven in understanding the story-telling process from which these stories were born. The exhibition is directed by Prof Rafia Ghubash, founder of the Women’s Museum.
HERstory is described as the first chapter of a wider project under the title Women Design Capital, launched during the Dubai Design Week and intended to produce a series of cross-cultural exchanges and dialogues on topics concerning women and aiming to culminate at Expo 2020.
To 31 March. General admission to the Women’s Museum is AED 20.
