Cría cuervos (Raise Ravens): dir Carlos Saura (1976)
11 May @ 8.00 pm - 10.00 pmFree
A film that melds the personal and the political in a portrait of the legacy of fascism and its effects on a middle-class family. The title derives from the Spanish proverb: “Raise ravens and they’ll peck out your eyes”; Carlos Saura produced a touching and thought-provoking fable that subtly evokes both the complex feelings of childhood (an amazing performance by the young actress Ana Torrent as the disturbed eight-year-old girl mourning the death of her mother, played by an ethereal Geraldine Chaplin, who she conjures as a ghost) and the struggles of a nation emerging from the shadows – Spain was just emerging from 40 years of Fascist rule. A genuine masterpiece.
