1001 Nights: The Last Chapter
23 April @ 9.00 pm - 11.00 pmAED 150 – AED 200
This spectacular production – claimed to be the largest of its kind, with 537 people involved as artists and behind the scenes (including a 51-piece orchestra) – represents the grand opening of the year-long celebrations for the UNESCO World Book Capital 2019 title that Sharjah won last year.
The Head of the Inauguration Ceremony Committee of the Sharjah World Book Capital said the performance will “change the face of live entertainment in the UAE, and will reinvent the genre of performing arts”, which is a bold claim. It does look pretty special, though; the production – inspired of course by the epic anthology of folk tales – comes from Multiple International, a noted creator of immersive stage experiences, and features an international cast of actors, gymnasts, acrobats, horseback riders and musicians along with “the kind of audio-visual technology only seen in a handful of theatre productions” (it uses 80 audio speakers ad around 250 mobile lights: the production required around 5km of electrical cabling) and a 1,030m2 stage. Maybe a kind of Cirque du Soleil experience toned down for a family audience? It will be delivered in three languages, Arabic, English and French, with simultaneous translation via headphones.
There’s one performance daily at 9pm from 23 to 27 April.
