Design for community: positivity in Sharjah

Design really should be responsible, and ideally it should have direct relevance to society. So we’re happy to see this project at 1971 – Design Space, the design space (well, there isn’t a better description for it) on Sharjah’s Flag Island that is run by Maraya Art Centre.

Mobius Design Studio has been invited to curate Design House: Change, Coordinates + Someone Else, eight design projects with a specific community focus, to introduce affirmative change and draw attention to “hidden potentials of Sharjah-based communities”.
The participants have been tasked with proposing design driven solutions that serve to enhance the quality of life or give a voice to a group of people.

The aim is to connect design sustainability and design activism on a tangible, practical level. Says Giuseppe Moscatello, Director of Maraya Art Centre and 1971 Design Space: “With Design House: Change Coordinates + Someone else, we’ve created a platform for designers to address what they perceive to be challenges in our Sharjah communities, and have given them an open forum to ameliorate those obstacles and put forth solutions.

“We are especially excited about sharing the research and ideas with the audience, which will allow designers to incorporate their feedback as they continue to take their projects forward”

It’s a longish-term project, starting on 10 Dec with a public critique where the designers will discuss their ideas. March 2017 will see an exhibition that showcases the outcomes of their respective projects.
