The sixth production of the Abu Dhabi theatre group Beyond the Veil is a characteristically strong choice – the premier of a new work by Emirati playwright Saleh Karama Al Ameri.
The Stores Are Now Open is described as “a psychological probe into the universal concepts of marriage and materialism”. The marriage is the union of Murad and Lamis; he’s unemployed, she is tired of being the sole earner, and the marriage is on the rocks. To provide grounds for a divorce she persuades a maid to seduce him. Things don’t work out quite as expected – by the end of the play, the husband has a job and the wife has lots of shopping.
The play is directed by the indefatigable Zakaia Cvitanovich, Artistic Director and prime mover of Beyond the Veil. Her approach to Al Ameri’s script incorporates grilled meat, popcorn and death by slo-mo (it says here). It sounds a lot of fun, and well worth supporting.
There’s a women-only matinee on 3 November and performances for all-comers in the evening of 3 and 4 November.
