Tangled up in NYU

Australia’s Polyglot Theatre is back with another unmissable interactive family event: Tangle is coming to the Central Plaza at NYU Abu Dhabi, and it looks like a lot of fun.

Polyglot was a bit hit in The Arts Center’s inaugural season, when they organised several thousand cardboard boxes and several dozen enthusiastic participants to create a construction in the Plaza for We Built This City. As NYUAD Arts Center Executive Artistic Director Bill Bragin puts it: “What I love about their work is how it appeals to kids of all ages – the young and young at heart – and sends the message that a performing arts centre can be loud, messy, interactive and fun”.

For Tangle you get to weave coloured elastic around golden poles to a vibrant beat of live music; a dense, multi-coloured sculpture begins to take shape – and carries on developing into a beautiful abstract landscape as more people contribute over the two weekends of the residency.

Conceived and directed by Polyglot’s artistic director Sue Giles, the show is basically designed for children aged 2 to 12 years old; but if you don’t have any handy, try to borrow one or more and get stuck in …

It also happens to have more than just fun in its DNA. Bill Bragin again: “Tangle, with its multi-coloured web of ribbons, is a great metaphor for life in Abu Dhabi, capturing the way in which we’re all intertwined in this amazingly diverse community. Since the site also becomes an evolving installation at the centre of NYU Abu Dhabi’s campus, we especially wanted to host this event during Abu Dhabi Art, where people can experience it both as an interactive performance event as well as a physical installation.”
