Art Jameel is previewing its forthcoming Dubai arts library – a major component of the arts centre it is building on the Creek, due to open 11 November – with a summer pop-up Research Studio at its Project Space Art Jameel location in Alserkal Avenue.
Curated by the author, curator and translator Omar Berrada, a member of Art Jameel’s Curatorial Council and director of the Dar al-Ma’mûn library and artists’ residency in Marrakech, it focuses on the theme of ‘Confluence’.
In practice it comprises a reading room and research space; the reading material runs to more than 150 publications in English and Arabic, selected by Berrada to consider the notion of confluence from a variety of different directions – how people travel, how cultures meet, how languages transform around borders.
The Studio side is complementary. Berrada says it “explores the many dimensions of textual and cultural translation, including the mutation of forms in the history of art. It dwells both on the function of port cities in a globalised economy and on the intimate meeting of souls that a published correspondence between artists allows us to witness”.
Artist Noush Anand and translator and critic Hafsa Hariga will be running reading groups in English and Arabic respectively. Free and open to all, these will be based on readings selected from Berrada’s bibliography to provide a platform for discussion, reflection and debate on the programme’s theme.
The reading groups are on Saturdays, in the morning for the English-language group led by Noush Anand – 14, 21, and 28 July, plus 4 August (11am to 1pm) – and in the afternoon for the Arabic group under Hafsah Hariga – 14 and 28 July, plus 11 August and 1 September (4-6pm).
Each group is limited to a maximum of 10, and participants are required to commit to the reading material and to attending all four sessions. Registration by email to [email protected].
The Research Studio runs to 31 July, open to the public Saturday to Thursday from 10am to 6pm.
