Don Ferdinand Tabbun has been named the winner of the United Arab Emirates National Award in the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards. Tabbun, an architect from the Philippines now based in Abu Dhabi, won for a photograph titled Challenge taken during the Al Dhafra Camel Festival (above).
That was selected by an expert panel of judges as the best single image taken by a photographer in the UAE – he’s one of 63 National Award winners – though the overall and Professional category winners of the Sony Awards won’t be announced until 19 April.
Tabbun wins the latest digital imaging equipment from Sony and his image will be displayed at the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in London (20 April to 6 May) as well as appearing in the 2018 Awards’ book.
Produced by the World Photography Organisation, the Sony World Photography Awards is the world’s most diverse photography competition. Last year saw a record-breaking 320,000 submissions by photographers from more than 200 countries, and a win is genuinely impressive.
