Sharjah Ladies Club’s new Noon Arts Award is open to any female resident of the UAE between the ages of 18 and 40. The theme is ‘Huwiyyati’, which translates as ‘my identity’; the aim is “to celebrate the raw, unencumbered individuality of an artist”.
“Many women often hide or even give up their artistic abilities and individuality to fit in within the social constructs that define our existence,” said Shaikha Alsuwaidi (right), manager of the SLC’s hub for arts education, Collage Talent Center. “This sometimes distorts the raw unique qualities in their personality, dissolving the very essence of what truly defines them.
“Through the Noon Arts Award competition, our aim is to encourage female artists to explore the important questions of what does it really mean to be an individual, and how the world around them plays a role in shaping their personalities, preferences, and lives as artists.”
There are separarte categories for painting and photography, with prizes of AED 10,000 for the Artist Award in each category (for more established artists) and AED 5,000 for Rising Star Awards (younger entrants).
Selected artworks will be exhibited from 24 to 30 October 2017 at SLC’s Noon Gallery.
Apply by 10 September on the website.
