The Smovies is a platform that provides filmmakers an opportunity to shoot their own films, and supports them by providing them a platform for the films to be viewed. This sixth edition is looking for 60-second shorts on the theme Culture And Understanding.
Although “creativity” is touted as the principal requirement, there’s a fairly explicit undertone of cultural commitment: “start filming and spread your love for UAE … Demonstrate your culture through 60 second in a story, documentary-style presentation or social commentary”. And of course “stay away from anything to do with politics, religion and promiscuity”.
The 60 seconds should include a standard opening and closing frame that is provided by the organisers; credits on one page showing for no more than three seconds, and while subtitles are ok “if needed” no spoken commentary or dialogue is allowed.
The winning film will be screened at VOX cinemas across the UAE.
