LitFest student competitions now open

The annual Emirates Airline Festival of Literature student writing competitions for poetry and prose have opened. today. The Oxford University Press Story Writing Competition and the Taaleem Award for poetry have become important additions to the academic calendar here, with the number of participants growing every year – last year saw more than 2,200 submissions for the story-writing, 1,200 for the poetry.

Both competitions run in Arabic and in English; they are open to students who are resident in the UAE and between the ages of 8 to 25. (There are age-specific categories: 11 and under, 12-14, 15-17 and 18-25.) Entries for the competitions are now open to individuals as well as through participating schools, colleges and universities.

Unusually for the UAE, there are no extravagant prizes. Instead the winning entries are published in a commemorative dual-language book, which will be presented to the finalists at the prize-giving ceremonies during next year’s LitFest (1-10 March 2018).

The deadline for submissions is 16 November 2017. Information here.
